Prayer in School Just to be clear, my faith is firmly rooted in Jesus Christ. I believe the Bible is the infallible Word of God. I pray daily and often. Now about school prayer... The whole idea of school prayer as some sort of thing that ought to be done over loud speakers and led in a public forum is a concept that I'm not totally comfortable with in all situations. Here's a true story of a principal that goes on a rant at a football game and ends up leaving a few moments for people to pray as they feel comfortable. He may have gotten a little excited in his rant, but the way he ended it is very groovy. Check it out: click here If I understand the school rules correctly, if a principal wants to provide opportunities for people to pray he can, much like the man did in the story above. I think what a lot of Christians want is to pray their prayers publically. However, I don't think that a student that's a Jew or any other branch of religion or even irreligious should have to pray or hear a Christian prayer in a public setting. If the whole school or segment in question is admittedly all Christian, fine. But as a Christian I must respect someone if they are a Jew, Buddhist, Islamite, etc. and respect that they don't pray as I do. (For clarity, respecting someone is not the same as endorsing their beliefs.) And I can't seem to find a Biblical example of Jesus forcing the ways of the Father on anyone. Again, if I understand it correctly, every student can pray all they want in school--- to themselves or even in small groups. And principals can create all the space they want for people to pray like the man did in the story. We Christians can pray our fool faces off the way I see it. Prayer does not need a loud speaker or need to be led by a school official for it to work. God hears the silent prayers and the ones that plain old students & parents pray, be it on the way to class, to school, in the cafeteria etc. (C'mon, have you seen that food? It NEEDS God's help! ;-) So let the legislators legislate and let the Christians quit whining & get to praying---wherever we are! Peace. |
