6/9/98 9:50 am Lesson From Meghan & Slater... -Morgan Young Family...........your own family.............the family you created......from wedding to childbirth. Unlike the one from whence we came.....this one was created, intentionally or accidently, by us. It is ours. A direct by-product of who we are. We see ourselves in the smiles of a son or daughter as they wave wildly as they commute to the sitter's....waving and oozing emotion & energy as if this were the first leg of a grand cross country trip....but it's only 12 blocks. This is the time before they know what relativity and timeframes are. They don't measure & ration their emotion based on the appropriateness of the situation...or worry about how the rest of their day will measure up to their pre-agenda'd day-timer. Their love for us flows as if every goodbye is the last......and greet us as if the last 3 hours was an eternity. At spontaneous times in the day, they will unexpectedly jump up for a hug....or just a lengthy lap lounge.....and really cling to you: the kind of touch & holding that says, "I really needed this....You are so important to me....or, It's just been a rough day at the sitter's & I'm really in need of some serious lovin'." And what is it that makes these seemingly little acts slice through our heart like it's soft Parkay? Maybe it's because in the grown-up world of work, commerce.....and dare I even say...relationships? We don't see much real "from the heart" sincerity. And in the shadow of our adult pseudo sincerity, real unrestrained flowing emotion sticks out like a refreshing sore thumb. Maybe it's because in contrast to our life motto's: "Go for it!", "Attitude!", "Work hard, play hard", "Just do It", etc......kids really own the market on Carpe Diem. They embody it in all they are & all they do.........for all they know......today is all they have. Tomorrow is a year from now....and the most important things in their day are the people who are in them.....not the plans they have made...........Here's to our kids....may they teach us "Carpe Diem"....to seize the day. |
