                                                                 Leather              -Morgan Young

News flashI am so weird.  I got my new leather Daytimer wallet in the mail over a week ago.  I just now transerred the contentsreluctantly.  The old one was worn and beginning to fray around the top seamI wanted a new one even before I had lost the old one (which was subsequently mailed back to me).  But now, the old one feels like an old baseball glove that's broken in just so.  It flops open and closed with minimal effort just like my old glove.  The contents fit snugly into the grooves they've worn over the last 5 or so years.  The new wallet is like a new pair of oxford dress shoessame oxblood colorsame brittle leather feel.  The old one light tan and then distressed on top of that, feels like an old pair of running shoes---well in tune with it's owner.  As I get older I'm uncovering a sentimental streak in me that frankly I wasn't aware of.  It surprises me.  But somehow things that have been with me for a good length of time evoke a sense of loyalty and familiarity.  This worn Daytimer has managed to make its way back to me from Florida like a dog in a sappy movieand now I set it aside.  Can someone tell me where these trite mushy emotions come from?  I'd just assume send them back.  It's an inanimate object for Pete's sake---whoever Pete is! Perhaps it's something about leather.  Leather is organic, takes on a new shape, it has that leather smell, it becomes unique to youit has warmth.  Older leather things have "character"for Pete's sake. (There's Pete again)  New leather seams to be coldshinyalmost synthetic.    Looking at these same, yet different wallets lying side by side embodies transformation. On the left is the beginning, a starting point.  On the right, the effects of time, environment, experience and influence.  And after all that, the difference is dramatic.  After the effects of time, it has become molded, more unique, richer in character.  And yes, older, and more worn.  I suppose I'm not that different from a piece of leather left in the hip pocket of an Immortal Being.  I guess I'll put this old wallet in a drawer for who knows whenfor Pete's sake.
