4 Lies That Mess You Up!: "God Can't Use Me" Morgan Young 5.26.02
I know that everyone can relate with the guy in the drama ALL of us at sometime or another have been on the fence when it comes to engaging in actually serving at church. And I'm sure there are several eyes one me right now of people who are on the fence or not even on the fence
And right now your little pop-up video of the mind is saying, "Great---another 'rah-rah' let's get in the game speech," and as soon as you sat down and opened your bulletin & saw the topic, you kind of slumped down in your seat a little bit.
I want to say to everyone on the fence today: We want to give you space and time to examine Christianity But I want to ask you---everyone---to be open this morning for how God may nudge you today And if during this talk, you feel a restlessness---a nudging, a conviction that you've been sitting long enough, then God may be trying to get your attention. (Thank God & pray for open hearts.)
(Audience participationdry erase board) What are benefits you've experienced from playing on a team? (interact & write)
TEAM "BENES": Made friends Learned skills Learned how to follow Learned how to lead Learned how to work w/others Focus on what's importantachieve goal Learn to put team needs above your own Felt belongingconnection etc
As you look at the things we wrote, would we say that being part of a team has the potential to enrich our lifeto make it better?? (yes? "Talk to me!")
Has anybody ever been part of a really GOOD winning teamlike you won state, regionals, your division? (hands)
There's nothing better than a team that's hitting on all cylinders whether we're on one or just watching one---when a GREAT team is working together, we get awe-struck.
(ppt pic mania!) When we watched the MJ ppt-2 clicks) era Chicago Bulls, we were awe-struck. Old people like me who remember the Johnny Bench ppt, Pete Rose ppt, Joe Morgan ppt, Ken Griffey SENIOR, Cincinnati Reds Big Red Machine, Larry Byrd ppt era Celtics we were awe-struck by them. The Chicago Cusorry Typo J
Or if you're more artsy than fartsy, when you experience really good symphony, or ballet, Cirque DuSoleil, jazz band, rock band, we get awe-struck when a bunch of talented gifted artists are working as one.
And we're even "awed" by corporate teams --- We want to see interviews and read books with Bill Gates of Microsoft,ppt-2clks Jack Welch ppt of GE, Norman Schwartzkopf ppt-2clks of Desert Storm, Oprah ppt-2clks of EVERYTHING.---we want to know how they managed to put together such an AWEsome team.
Here's the truth about you and me---there is something in us that respects and looks up to killer teams and deep down, we want to be on a killer team
There's a part of all of us that wants to say, "This team rocks and I'm good enough to be a player in making it rock!" (little pause) That is true of you and me. Yes?
Just so you'll know the church, this church needs teams that rock. And deep down you want to be part of a team that rocks.
And again, (to easel) we all know the benes of being on a team and let's look at these team benes in the context of church ppt---if we hooked up with a team at Oakbrook:
We could make friends ppt develop relationships that a little more significant than the water cooler talk at work.
We could feel a sense of belonging and this BIG ppt church could feel small to us.
We could learn how to be part of the process that saves people's souls ppt for eternity.
In short, our lives could be enriched by being on a team that's not battling for the Stanley Cup, the Pennant, The Borg-Warner or the Vince Lombardi Trophy, but battling for peoples LIVES!
So think about getting off the fencebecause deep down, you really---you really want to be part of a team that rocks, that's doing something significant. /// (Little pause & "Who Are You?" CD plays & PPT "Morgan's Who's Who" slide)
(ppt Pic of Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown) (ask who knows???)
This is Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown, ppt a Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher. And when a reporter asked him if his curve ball was helped because Mordecai did not have an index finger, Brown said,
"To know for sure, I'd have to throw with a normal hand, and I've never tried it."
He was called "Three Finger" because in childhood he lost two fingers on his right hand (throwing arm), and somehow having three fingers left him with one of baseball's most wicked curve balls.
Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown won the decisive game of the 1907 World Series for the Chicago Cubs. In 1908 he was the first pitcher to record 4 consecutive shutouts and finished 29-9. He had a career record of 239 w & 130 l and lifetime Earned Run Average of 2.06.
(little pause)A man with three fingers on his right hand sure could have said, "Professional Baseball Can't Use Me."
And when it comes to you and I serving in the church, when we kind of take inventory of ourselves----when we see if we're "worthy" or "measure up" enough to play a part in God's Kingdom
Often we notice we have only three fingers too We know we're not 100% together
And we're tempted to say the lie: "God can't use meI've only got three fingers"ppt
(Ppt) God can't use me: ppt Not with my past---not with what I've done God can't use me: ppt Not with the hurt I have inside God can't use me: ppt Not with someone as untalented as I am God can't use me: ppt I don't have anything to bring that fits-in in a church!
We need to be reminded today, that if the church was a baseball team, then Christ is the only one with five fingersthe rest of us, ALL of us, are less than perfect.
In fact, let me sum up the Bible for you this way: It's a God-breathed historical account of three finger people like us ---- people with colorful pasts people who've been hurt people that weren't the brightest or most talented---people that did not graduate valor dictorian people who were not Bible scholars
From cover to cover, it's story after story of flawed people like you and Ithat God used to do His work through----God is big enough to make up the difference of our three-finger lives
And just like Mordecai could throw a wicked curve ball because of his three finger hand --- people who have recovered from addiction can minister to people with addictions like nobody else
People who've recovered from divorce, can minister & serve people going through divorce like nobody else
People who've recovered from moral failures can minister to people going through moral failures like nobody else
People who've recovered from abusive families can minister to people in those situations like nobody else
What about you? What's YOUR three finger story? What have you lived through? How has God shown up in your life?
You maybe saying, "Look, I am not wired up to counsel people who've been through what I've been through."
You are probably right. But when we get involved with something as simple as being a greeter, and we make friends with someone, and we find out they've just come off a wicked divorce---- we can listen like nobody else---empathize like nobody else --- and then, in this simple act of service called "greeting"---we make an opportunity for God to show up between two three-finger people(pause)
And for what it's worth, I have moments when I have to deal with these lies of "I'm not worthy" that keep us from serving... I'm 37 years old, and at this point, more than half of my life was spent away from God living the life I wanted to live ---- and once in a while I'll catch myself in my office studying for a message or preparing to meet with someone
And a little voice says, "Aren't there more educated more mature Christ followers to do this stuff Who are you to do this?"
But the correct answer is: I'm a three finger baseball pitcher that God has called up And just like Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown impacted baseball, BY GOD'S GRACE, I get the honor of impacting other three finger players in the game of life. AND YOU DO TOO! (repeat) *IF* you'll get off the fence
Because those sentences on the side screen are lies that can mess us up if we allow them toGuys we have got to face the truth, which is God CAN USE US!!
Let's look at some Scriptures that clearly tell us God's plan:
ppt1. "All of you together are Christ's body (church), and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it." 1 Cor. 12:27-28 nlt (doesn't say "some of you")
ppt 2. "For we are God's workmanship, created in Jesus Christ to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." Eph. 2:10 niv
ppt 3. "Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits. All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful" 1 Cor. 12:7 The Message
ppt 4. "It is absolutely clear that God has called you to a free life. Just make sure that you don't use this freedom as an excuse to do whatever you want to do ... Rather, use your freedom to serve one another in love." Gal. 5:13 The Message
Real quick recap on these verses: Who is excluded from serving?? (no one!)
Look at these snippets from these verses: "Each one is a necessary part of it." 1 Cor 12:27-28 "We are God's workmanship." Eph 2:10 "Each person is given something to do that shows who God is" 1 Cor 12:7 "Serve one another in love." Gal 5:13
The lie is "God can't use me." This is the truth about you! Maybe you need to write these down. Because if you're like me, you can have a tendency to believe that how you feel on a given day is the truth. But the truth is written in God's Word
So I use a bookmark in my Bible that's full of Biblical truths about me, and when I don't "feel" worthy, or adequate I read through what God clearly says about me, because the truth is NOT how I feel----the truth is what God says in His Word
And as we look at Galatians 5:13 we notice it's not a suggestion, it's a command, "Do it!"ppt God says.
Our new house is right next to the little league field in Highland Park. Every night there are little league games going on literally on the other side of our back yard fencevery cool!
Now imagine you and I went around our fence and sat on the bleachers to watch a game Now imagine that during a game, a kid dressed in a uniform exactly like the ones that are playing on the field sits down next to us
He's got his Rawlings 100% cowhide glove broken in just right, he's got his shiny Easton aluminum bat with him, cleats, stirrups, batting glove, he's got a mouthful of sunflower seeds going, personalized batting helmet---(the whole schmere, decked-out big time!)
And you look at him, up & down, you see all the gear----you look out at his teammates in the field working to beat this other team and finally you say, "DUDEwhat is the deal??!!!"
And in the church, there are people who are "on the team"that is to say, they're Christ followers And they have their small group, and their friends at church and their Bible has a really cool broken-in leather carrying case--- it looks so old you wonder if the Dead Sea Scrolls may have been kept in IT all those years
and they have a really cool "Jesus fish" bookmarkhey carry around these little Christian breath fresheners called "TestaMINTS" they've got their WFRN bumper sticker they've got a WWJD bracelet
But in the course of a week or month all they do is walk in and out of church and they don't really engage in doing anything to help outside their comfort zone
And (respectfully) I want to say to them, just like the imaginary kid in the bleachers, "Dude--- what is the deal?"
If we are Christ followers but we don't serve, if we're on the fence ppt and not engaged in "good works" that honor God then we're as silly as the kid on the bleachers
Fully devoted followers of Christ, don't just suit-up --- they get off the fence & roll up their sleeves and do whatever they can ---the best they can with the three killer fingers God gave them. (pause)
And I want to say a word to seekers---- If you're not in a relationship with Christ but you've been coming for a while and you're definitely intrigued Then I want to ask you get off of the fence and get going in the process of figuring out God getting involved serving around here is a GREAT way to investigate Christianity
To me it's like test driving a car before you buy it. See what it's like from the inside the worst thing that happens is you meet some new people and maybe you strike up a friendship. ///
I bet that one reason a lot of people don't get off the fence and start serving is a rational and very normal fear of the unknown. And the truth is, if you never served before the whole thing IS unknown!Who knows what's going to happen if we call up a team leader and ask about serving in their ministry?
Well, I'd like to share about something that hopefully will give you a reason to get over the fear:
Last year about this same time, our Firewire youth staff had just finished up and left. Back then, the jr. & sr. high ministry didn't continue through the summer, BUT, they had scheduled this trip to a week-long Christian youth retreat in Panama City Florida, called Big Stuf
So naturally we were short staffed for the summer, and we had the basketball camp, Big Stuf and Summer Fun Days in consecutive weeks.
And I looked at the calendar, and said, "Look, 'somebody' has to take this bus-load of students to FL. so I'll volunteer, since Malin IS a basketball player so he can help out the BB camp the next week & so he won't have to do BOTH, back-to-back.
Please understand--- (tell story----end: "Came back different")
Because I said "yes" to the unknown of going to Big Stuf & Firewire:
-- Leading Firewire was taught me to pray with a new level of passion and faith ("just" prayers)
--It has stretched my teaching like nothing ever has--- & forced me to seriously seek God in that process.
-- It has opened my life up to what young people are dealing with in a way that has marked my lifeand made me more concerned than I ever would have been
-- It has grown my faith in HUGE waysby depending on God to answer prayers to enable us to do what He wants in this ministry
I may never be the same after this experience(your kids may never be the same either)
I'd like to share a testimony from our Firewire last Sunday. (Intro Laurenwill be frosh at KHS next fall) VIDEO CLIP
If ever there was a reason to get off the fence, it's that 4-minute testimony Here's an 8th grader, who's trying to straddle the fence herselfa fence between what God wants for her & what her friends are telling her
And this little FW team was lucky enoughNO, blessed enough to be used by God to help keep her where God wants her, to be an authentic Godly influence in her life I'd take a pass on the Chicago Bulls, the Celtics, Bill Gates, and Jack Welch's teams in a nano-second!to be part of a team that helped influence Lauren Duncan's life or your life.
And as I first listened to her story last Sunday, I thought: Hmmher struggles really aren't that different from a lot of our struggles we know what God wants and we know what the world says and like Lauren, we straddle the fence of going God's way or the world's.
Friends, THIS is why we serve! Wherever we serve in the Kingdom, whether it's in a nursery, on a clean team, a greeter team---we do it all so God will do HIS work in people's lives! In your life and the lives your friends livesin your family.
And God's WANTS to make a difference in people's lives But He has this crazy plan and that's to use three finger ball players like you and me
If we will follow His command in Galatians 5:13 and get off the fencewe can ALL be part of teams that rock and rock for eternity (PRAY for people to respond & His work be done.)
